Storytelling is an Art
Storytelling is an art and one that will help you sell your services. Use stories to express these points about your business.

  • The target market: WHO were you serving?
  • The problem you solved: WHAT was your client’s dilemma?
  • The solution you delivered: HOW did you help the client overcome the dilemma?
  • WHAT additional VALUE did your solution bring to the client?
  • Why YOU? Why are you CREDIBLE to do this? What sets you apart?

Tips for Storytelling

Before you launch into telling the actual story, you’ll want to set up your audience to know what to expect. Open up with the problem that your target market is experiencing to set the stage.

Tell about your troubles, stupidity, or ignorance. People like you when you use self-effacing stories because they see themselves mirrored in your weaknesses. It is comforting to know that we are not allow in our challenges.
I was at a presentation recently where the speaker did a great job of storytelling about his own mistakes to emphasis the importance of his message. He certainly made me not want to have the same experiences. Then he set himself up as the solution. I laughed during the entire presentation and was convinced he was the person to hire.

Storytelling is Easy

How can you develop into a great storyteller? Do a brain dump of all of the mistakes you have made as it pertains to your area of expertise. Once you have your list select one story and create a narrative around the challenges and how you solved the issue. Do this for each story that you want to use to demonstrate your expertise and that will set you up as the expert.
Once written go through your story and eliminate inconsequential detail. Take out all of the extra words that are not necessary. Writing the story out will help you see words that can be eliminated without hurting the story. Ask yourself does this really contribute to the message I am trying to convey.
Once you have your stories you can use them in many different ways in your business. Use them in your copy, your public speaking and to create case studies. This is one of the ideas you can play with to see if storytellingis a strategy that will help you to capture more clients. So what do you think will you use storytelling techniques in your business copy writing? Good stories can move people to action. Storytelling works 🙂
