You’ve worked so hard on creating a work that people will love. Now all you need is something to convince people they should read what you’ve created.

The cover of your book is the first thing potential readers see. Though creating a book cover may seem like haphazard combinations of fonts, colors, and images that just sit nicely with its creator, there is science and mechanism behind the creation of a book cover.

Most people know the commonly used expression “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” The fact of the matter is, your book willbe judged by its cover. Try as you might to fight this nugget of truth, there isn’t any getting around it. Your book cover is a visual representative of what is written on the pages inside. Since the cover of a book is the very first thing that meets the reader’s eye, the message it conveys should be clear and should align with the story unfolding within.

In the words of accomplished book cover designer Chip Kidd, “A book cover is a distillation of the content, almost like what your book would look like as a haiku.”

Know Your Audience

The design of a book cover is a science as well as a fine art. Different aesthetics will appeal to different types of people. When you’re in the process of designing your book cover, your target audience needs to be taken into account.

Your book cover is, essentially, a marketing strategy to your audience. The words on the inside should have everything to do with your color scheme, typography, and format. Ask yourself what your audience should expect from your book, and then make sure the cover is designed appropriately to give what the reader expects from you.

Font Type Matters

The font in which your book title will be displayed is equally as important as the rest of your cover. If we’re being realistic, you should know that no one likes Comic Sans. If this were a do’s and don’ts list, using Comic Sans or Papyrus fonts would definitely be at the top of the don’t list. The font you choose should grab the reader’s attention, but it’s a good idea to stick with only one type of font, or two at the most.

Remember the Back Cover

With all the talk about fonts, colors, and imagery on the front cover, you don’t want to leave out the back cover. The back cover is made for a short blurb or small description of your book. This is a sales pitch to make potential readers understand why they need to buy yourbook.

The goal of the back-cover blurb is to leave the reader wanting more. When you write the blurb, give the reader enough information to grab their attention, but don’t give away too much. Leave them with some vague idea of what’s to come. You want to compel them to open it and see the resolution for themselves.

Of course, keeping the reader’s attention is almost as important as gaining it. You don’t want to lose the reader’s attention before they even leave the back cover. A general rule to go by is to write in short paragraphs so it’s easier for the reader to scan.

Say what you will, but a great example of an effective back cover blurb comes from Stephanie Mayer’s Twilight:

“About three things I was absolutely positive.

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him – and I didn’t know how
dominant that part might be – that thirsted for my blood.

And the third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably
In love with him.”

Get Professional Help

While all the above are good pieces of advice to follow, you should get professional help. Professional designers can help you appeal to your target audience with the right colors and images that are attractive to that audience. An experienced artist will have more knowledge about the things that draw readers in. If you have plans of your own for your book cover, remember that just because it is appealing to you doesn’t mean it will appeal to everyone.

If you want a good design but don’t have a few thousand dollars to shell out to an independent artist, there are still some options for you. You can still find some professional help on websites like Fiverror Upwork for a lower cost.

Hiring a professional doesn’t mean you have to give up your ideas entirely. Find artwork that appeals to you, and that can reveal your aesthetic to your artist. Take a look at other book covers similar to yours and even some that aren’t. Take note of the things you think are effective and what isn’t. Communicating with your artist will help you be able to achieve the perfect look that will satisfy you as well as the reader.

The decision to write a book is the first step, but the goal is to finish the book. It may seem overwhelming to begin this daunting task, or so exciting you don’t know where to begin. Writing a book can be compared to running a marathon. It takes some planning, training, and not a few missteps to reach the finish line.

Like running a marathon, the first step is to decide you are going to do it and make a commitment. The next steps will determine if you are prepared to complete the race. You wouldn’t expect to finish 26 miles without leaving your couch. When you decide to run a marathon, most likely you will set a training schedule, research which race is the best fit for you, and invest in the right gear to make it through the event. When you decide to start writing a book, there are necessary steps to complete your writing project.

Make a Decision

For a first-time book writer, selecting what your book is going to be about is the first step. If you only have one good idea, that may be better than having to select from all the ideas floating in your head. If you are trying to decide which topic is going to jump-start your business, and can’t focus because of all the great ideas you have, keep a list and narrow them down. You may even do a few rough outlines and see which one comes the most naturally. Once you complete your first book, you can always go back to your inspiration list for your next book idea.

Set a Goal

The ultimate goal is to FINISH the book. Set a goal of when you would like to finish the book, and work backward to figure out how much time, energy, and resources you will need to accomplish your goal. Like preparing for a big race, someone who has ample free time to train will likely find more ease in finishing than someone who works full time and has a multitude of other responsibilities.

Reflect on how much time you can dedicate each week and schedule that time to write. Everyone is different, so writing once a week may be the best you can do. Ideally, daily writing time will help you achieve your goal quickly. Don’t give up if you get off track, but try to carve out time to make up for missed writing. Be sure to check in each month to see if you are on track.

Select your Best Course of Action

Are you a type ‘A’ planner, or more laid back and willing to go with the flow? Don’t get so caught up in planning that you avoid or delay the actual writing. If you need to stay organized and on track to succeed, certainly plan to create a detailed outline as your base. If outlines are restricting or hold you back, simply start with a beginning, middle, and end. Allow yourself to work on the beginning and the end, then fill the gaps in between.

If you need a strict outline, follow it to guide yourself to the end. Like training for a marathon, many runners like to follow a specific training plan. However, sometimes you may get off track, lose momentum, or focus. If this happens, try to go to the end and work backward. This may not bridge the gap, but often will open your eyes and get you out of the monotony of writing chapter by chapter.

Overcome the Obstacles

Life always brings obstacles. Many runners face injuries that prevent them from running the marathon, or throw their training off track. For writers, there are even more obstacles to completing their first book. A major obstacle once you have been writing consistently is staying organized.

Some tips to stay organized are to plan ahead and take breaks if you are overwhelmed. If you are typing your book, be sure to use electronic folders and label items properly. If writing on paper, try to use separate notebooks, and have a designated space for all things book-related. Avoid editing or revising as you write and allow yourself to free write as much as possible.

Regardless of your writing method, at least try to keep the writing separated by the beginning, middle, and end. Keep in mind the time you spend scrolling or searching is robbing you of time to write.

Make it to the Finish Line

Staying organized and motivated will allow you to succeed in finishing your first book. Although the task seems large, breaking it down into small goals and setting realistic expectations makes the process simple. Lastly, try to find a local accountability partner or online support group to get feedback and stay on track. You are on your way to a best-seller.

Have you written a book? How did you get started? More importantly, how did you make sure to finish? Share some advice from your journey with our readers in the comment section below.

Regardless of your particular industry, as a small business owner, writing and publishing your own book is a highly effective strategy for building your business. But writing and publishing the book is only the beginning of leveraging it as a key marketing strategy. This article is not about marketing your book to sell a million copies; it’s about using the book as a resource for growing your business.
The business growth comes from attracting ideal clients, positioning yourself as a leader in your industry, and gaining more exposure in your business market. Is it necessary to write a book to build a successful business? Necessary, no; however, you’re missing out on an extremely efficient way to promote your expertise if you choose not to publish and use a book.
How can writing and publishing a book help me to build my business?

Writing a Book will Build Your Authority and Credibility

Writing a relevant and authoritative book concerning your business niche or specialty is one of the fastest ways to establish your authority in your particular industry. A published work that others find useful builds your status as an expert in what you do and enhances your credibility within your market. Your audience assumes that if you’ve written a book on a particular subject, you know a lot about it. Therefore, you’re an expert. Who else would you want to engage for a service but the person who “wrote the book” on your field?
How should you begin? Start a blog or regular newsletter about your book. Send a newsletter out once every three or four weeks and blog two or three times a week about the content of your book. If your book is available through a traditional publisher, be sure you secure permission to use excerpts in online and print advertising. Provide a link to your website at the bottom of every article and newsletter so readers can purchase your book and learn more about your services.

Create It Once, Use It Multiple Times

Creating and publishing a book means you have plenty of content you can use again and again. Repurpose sections and chapters of the book as new or updated content, all pointing back to your book and, ultimately, back to your business. While a book is credible, not everyone likes to read. Why not take the core process you lay out in your book and create a video overview? Or how about creating several video or podcast episodes on your website discussing each chapter with a guest?
I’ll bet I can read your mind: “Why should I do this? Why can’t I simply use my book?” As an author, I know well that it is usually impossible to include everything necessary in a book. Moreover, as business and the world around us changes, so will the relevancy of what we have written or how it should be applied. Changing factors may warrant an update to the book and give reasons to introduce new information through a variety of venues that will reach different people.

Use Your Book to Attract Interviews and Speaking Engagements

Expert status and professional credibility are very powerful in securing media attention. If you speak as part of your business marketing strategy (and you should) leverage your book and the authority it lends you to schedule speaking engagements at trade shows and other business venues. Your status as a published author affects how you are perceived by the media and business leaders.
Publish all interviews, articles, and speaking engagements on your website, and include links to your book. Be sure to email articles, interviews, and publicity links to all the customers and prospects on your mailing list. Letting your audience know you have been featured in interviews and trade shows increases your credibility and attracts even more interview offers.

Use Your Book as a Calling Card When Networking

When attending conferences, seminars, training events, networking events, or workshops, have copies of your book available. These and other venues are filled with ideal clients and great referral partners. Give away copies of your book as your business or calling card. Signed copies are especially prized and make a great long-term reference to your business. No one throws away books that are signed by the author.
Remember, you are not trying to sell your book; you’re trying to sell your business. The book is a tool that lends you credibility. Give free copies to steady customers and good prospects. In the case of existing customers, present it to them personally when possible along with a personal note thanking them for their business, referrals, or any other way they have helped your company.

A Note About Publishing Your Book

Although there are myriads of self-publishing venues available now, that is no reason to skimp on quality. Beyond providing a solid work filled with relevant and useable knowledge, your book should reflect professionalism in every detail, from design to layout. Only choose high-quality images that reflect your business specialty or book topic well.
Titles are important and can be the reason a person chooses to open a book or tosses it aside. The back cover material is where the book sells itself and for your purposes, sells your business. Details matter. Appearances make impressions for good or bad. Invest the necessary thought and treasure into a book that reflects well on you and your company and it can be an effective tool for building your business.
How have you used a book to build your business? How did you go about choosing a topic and creating your book? We’d love to share your experiences with our readers. Please share your tips or lessons from using a book to build your business in the comment section below.

The word ‘publishing’ sparks images of rows upon rows of books, stretching along loaded shelves. Bibliophiles browse manifold selections of every possible genre with wide eyes and eager wallets. When self-publishing and/or traditional publishing is mentioned, however, opinions are as strong as a bibliophile’s unwavering attraction to the printed page. The ongoing controversy will not be settled anytime soon, nor should it be, ever. The hottest fire melds the strongest steel.
Moreover, this article will not attempt to offer arguments poised to convince one side or the other. We simply want to share some of our overarching reasons for loving self-publishing. And, why you as a writer should love it, too. Forget the standard claims we’ve all read in different forms. Consider these reasons for our self-publishing passion.

Highlight Your Uniqueness

Writers write for any number of reasons. Whatever the intrinsic motivation, your writing and reasons for doing so are uniquely yours. The singular you follows an inspirational and creative path like that belonging to no one else. Sure, we may all practice similar writing disciplines; but the course we chart when producing our work is totally unique.
Why, then, risk compromising that uniqueness by surrendering our creations and rights to a staid, structured, and conventional route of publishing? Traditional publishing has a damning tendency to squash the singular contributions many writers make in their own work for the sake of “marketability” or other such restrictive concerns. After all, their focus is to publish as many “winners” as possible, and winners must achieve a certain level established by editorial boards.
Self-publishing allows every writer to maintain their singular creative panache in every aspect of the project from start to finish. Be as exclusive and uncommon as you desire with your topics, genre-mixing, writing style, marketing style, cover design, and publishing process. Every facet of the journey can reflect your individual personality to the fullest, with no overarching authorities imposing restrictions.
Why do we love self-publishing? It allows us to each highlight our own uniqueness.

Push the Boundaries

Self-publishing is opening the doors to more authors than were ever recognized in the traditional publishing realm. In the past, books selected for such recognition as the Booker Prizes or Literary Nobel Prize followed a painfully predictable pattern. Self-published independent authors were excluded. A new prize, the Folio Prize, is gaining status among the publishing world, and it is open to any author writing in the English language, no matter the mode or method of publication. Organizations championing self-publishing, such as the Alliance of Independent Authors, continue to lobby for the right for self-published works to enter any competition.
Female writers are realizing success in self-publishing more than they ever could in traditional venues. FicShelf, an online publishing platform, reported that women are doing better in self-publishing than men. Among the top-rated self-publishing platforms, FicShelf found that 67% of the top-ranked titles were produced by women authors. Conversely, of the top 100 traditionally-published titles on Amazon, 61% are written by men. Clearly, it is the effort by the individual that counts in self-publishing, not merely an author’s gender.
As more new authors seek to push the boundaries in how they write and choose to publish, the doors to new opportunities open and the walls that separated us are torn down. This can only serve to enlighten and enliven the entire publishing world.
Why do we love self-publishing? It allows us to push the boundaries in every area of publishing.

Take Advantage of Market Share

Self-publishing has all too often been left out or grossly underrated when computations concerning U.S. and worldwide market share are correlated. The digital book phenomenon has caused self-publishing and resulting worldwide sales to literally explode. Further, non-traditional, untracked suppliers make up a large percentage of eBook sales all over the world, and these numbers are rarely if ever included in market share figures.
The main analysis self-publishing proponents point to is the May 2016 examination of traditional and self-publishing numbers by AuthorEarnings.com. In that study, the Big Five trade book publishers only claim 23% of market share, compared to 45% for self-published books. While these numbers are solid, and tell an encouraging tale, a new, more precise study is now available for examination; and it is even more promising.
A new refined measurement methodology by AuthorEarnings.com from February 2017 included the following:

The top five English-speaking countries

The 15 largest eBook stores

750,000 top-selling eBooks in all genres and categories

Daily sales data featuring 700,000 points of data from more than 20,000 eBook titles across all 15 stores

Here’s the distilled numbers from the long page of study charts and numbers. Authors utilizing self-publishing are achieving between 24%-34% of all eBook sales in each English-speaking market, including but not limited to the United States. Authors who fit into no distinct category, most of whom are also self-published, bump the true market share to between 30%-40%. These are hard, data-supported numbers that paint a bright picture for independent authors.
What does it all mean? It means authors who self-publish have a greater share of a growing market for their product than those who follow the traditional publishing route.
Why do we love self-publishing? It means more opportunity for earnings and growth than ever before.
What do you think? What’s your take on self-publishing vs. traditional publishing? Do you love self-publishing? Why or why not? Share your responses in the comments.

In the not-so-distant past, self-publishing carried a certain negative stigma. It was viewed as only for the failed author who could not attract a publisher on merit. Moreover, hosts of ‘vanity publishers’ promoted their services to handle self-publishing for you, for a fee that you could recover after selling as little as 500 copies of your book. If 500 copies were actually sold. If not, you were stuck with a load of books and no buyers. And a big ‘self-publishing’ bill for nothing.
As they say, the times have changed. With the rise in popularity of eBooks and print-on-demand services like CreateSpace, virtually anyone can publish a book with little to no up-front costs. One out of every three eBooks sold on Amazon are self-published. No need to print any copies up front, little to no minimum fees, and no need to spend precious time sending queries to publishing houses only to endure the interminable wait for ultimate rejection.

Should you consider self-publishing? Yes, and here are a few reasons why.

You Control the Timeline

Life is too short and business moves along too rapidly to spend months and years debating with an agent, begging before publishing houses, polishing, rewriting, and sending query letters, and waiting-waiting-waiting. If you are writing on a topic that involves your business, you need to make the product available while there is demand. Self-publishing allows you to control the pace of the entire process, from writing to design to publication and promotion.
Every self-publishing author should allow sufficient time for quality writing, rewriting, editing, and internal review. A high-quality publication will reflect well on your business. However, even if you are a master of the topic, a poorly written book will reflect poorly on your business. Attractive cover design is a must, but doesn’t have to take forever or require the services of a major design firm. Some time planning a promotional campaign and choosing appropriate avenues for promotion is always time well invested.
Even after allowing sufficient time for the above steps, and others, self-publishing allows you to set the pace and see a published book in weeks or months. From queries to acceptance (if you get that far) to editing, design, marketing, printing and distribution, traditional publishing will take a minimum of a few years. What if your topic is no longer viable? What if changes in the market or technology renders your writing obsolete? Controlling the timeline of the publishing process is a huge advantage of self-publishing.

You Retain the Rights to Your Material

When working through a publishing house, you are required to release the rights to your material to them. They may force changes in the content or title that you oppose. They can also delay the publishing process according to their own timetable. All so they can take the lion’s share of any profits from your original idea and hard work. Is that a suitable payoff for your work and creativity?
With self-publishing, you retain absolute ownership and control of the entire process, including your material. You enjoy the freedom of where to draw the line regarding editing, titles, design, promotion – everything. You also choose the venues for publication and set the price according to your own research and needs. Self-publishing puts you in the driver’s seat in all aspects of the publishing process.
With your own ISBN and complete control of the original work, you can also make any desired or necessary revisions or updates as business demands. With this power, your book can become evergreen – always fresh and relevant for today’s (and tomorrow’s) users. No long lead time for revisions or updates with a traditional publisher. Stay on top of the ever-changing nuances of your business niche with complete control of your material.

You Can Pursue Higher Royalties

Traditional publishing houses normally claim at least 85% of royalties from books they publish. This is necessary to for them to cover the huge overhead of editors, printers, and various other technical operations, before even realizing a profit. Then, your agent will take a share of the remaining crumbs, leaving you earning the least profit from your own creative work. But let’s face it, your goal as an author, especially as a business author, is not to generate a profit for the publishing houses. It is to generate more business and profit for yourself.
Compare that to the 40% claimed by CreateSpace, and only then when you sell a paperback copy. Moreover, eBooks cost considerably less to produce per copy and are available for instant download – no waiting for printing and shipping. Costs vary among online publishing and distribution services, but in many cases, you can retain as much as 90% of the sale price of your eBook, even after factoring in editing and design costs. Self-publishing allows you to enjoy the highest share of the fruits of your labors.

If you choose to self-publish your work, here are some important tips:

Plan and Execute Significant Marketing

Regardless of the method of publishing you choose, promotion is vital. With self-publishing, it is completely up to you to let your audience know your book is available and will provide value to them. Plan and promote a public launch through various channels including different social media platforms. Distribute copies for review by industry leaders or other authors within your niche. Spread positive reviews far and wide through every available means.
Marketing your book is an ongoing requirement. There are always others who haven’t yet heard of your book. Modify your promotions and methods occasionally. Take advantage of events, holidays, conferences, or any other relevant occurrences to create a tailored promotion. Consider relaunch marketing when any revisions are made to the book, including a new cover design. Getting and keeping your book before the masses is the number one key to sales.

Hire an Editor

As many times as you may have rewritten and revised your book, and however large or small its size, it is important to have a fresh set of professional eyes review it for errors. After looking at your work over a long period of time, you see what you expect to see, not what is actually written. A professional editor can make corrections and suggestions to improve how you present your ideas to ensure the best possible impression on your readers.
Your writing often forms the first impression, and you only get one chance to make it. Don’t let concerns over cost compel you to produce and market a poor product that reflects negatively on your business. Will you save enough from not hiring an editor to cover the incalculable cost of losing business due to a shoddy book representing your company? Don’t feed the stereotype that self-publishing only produces poor books. Hire a professional editor for your book.

Print vs. eBook

CreateSpace and other services can print your book on demand as orders are received from you or directly from customers. However, just because a physical copy of your book is possible, doesn’t mean it is needed. If you speak at conferences or trade shows and desire to make the book available to attendees, then a bulk order of physical copies is a good idea. If you only sell your book through your website or offer it as some sort of incentive for business, then an eBook is the best choice.
Always let how you plan to use your book dictate the format you publish. In today’s self-publishing environment, beginning with an eBook and choosing to later produce a print version is entirely possible with very little effort.
Self-publishing means you are completely responsible for the success or failure you experience with your book. An entrepreneurial mindset is a key factor when self-publishing, as well as a willingness to research and learn the business of publishing a book. When self-publishing, always have a clear plan for your book, especially if it is part of your strategy for business growth. Read and discover the ins and outs of self-publishing, learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others, and take full advantage of the amazing opportunity that is self-publishing. It is the ultimate entrepreneurial expression.

The Growing World of Self-Publishing

When you take on the role of a writer, you are often plagued with worry about the next step. When you are finishing, or have finished writing, you face a daunting decision of how to get your work to the reader. There are many factors to think about when you face the choice of self-publishing or traditional publishing.
As a writer, you may watch the trends regarding what genre of books are popular when you are ready to publish. If your book fits within a popular genre, it may be beneficial and easiest to go with traditional publishing. If the plot is geared toward a very specific audience, you may decide to self-publish. It is important to consider all factors when selecting how you are seeking to publish a manuscript. Most writers dream of succeeding and making the most profit from their book. You must consider the logistics of self-publishing versus traditional publishing.

Self-Publishing

The growth of technology, specifically eBooks and eReaders, has made it easier than ever to maintain creative control and self-publish a manuscript. Self-publishing skips the middle-men and higher ups, shortens the process, and gets your book quickly to your readers. Even children’s books have seen a rise in self-publishing. Amazon, partnered with Kindle eReaders, markets “direct- publishing.” Direct-publishing is essentially an expedited self-publishing through their company, Amazon, which claims to have your manuscript available for download in as little as a day’s time. In addition, when you utilize technology for self-publishing, your book is available around the world, not just in a few bookstores in the United States. They also offer paperback options if you want to have a hardcopy for your readers to purchase.
Self-publishing has additional benefits that are quite attractive to authors. Typically, you have say-so over how the book is priced and marketed. Since self-publishing takes out the middleman, agents and publishing houses, you will be able to set pricing. You can make your book very lost cost to potentially sell more copies than if you price it higher. Along with selecting how you price the book, you get to keep more royalties.
A higher royalty, also known as your cut of the profit, is associated with self-publishing over traditional publishing. By cutting overhead, you have the opportunity to earn more on each copy that sells. However, you only get money when the book sells. Again, eBooks are a good start when looking at self-publishing. Amazon is the leader of direct, or self-publishing, and offers up to 70 percent royalties, as seen on their pricing page. There is also a 35 percent royalty option, with many factors to include.
Is your book appropriate for self-publishing? That is the question you must ask yourself, and the answer often depends on the size and genre of your book. Amazon’s pricing page has some limitations; for instance, book size, delivery deductions and promotions. It is imperative to crunch the numbers and calculate what you need to make off the book, and what costs you may not have considered.
Createspace has a helpful royalties calculator that figures up pricing for dollars, as well as how that translates to pounds and euros if you are also selling in Europe. Additionally, pictures, colors, cover design, and book length will influence the cost of the book and need to be considered.

Traditional Publishing

If you are weary of self-publishing, or feel it isn’t the right fit for your book, then traditional publishing may be the better option. Rather than the responsibility for publishing falling primarily on you, traditional publishing has professionals who will assist you in your publishing goals.
When we hear the word traditional, we think of something familiar and repeated again and again. Thus, traditional publishing may seem like a safer way to publish your book. The truth is, it can often be a long, but rewarding process.
First, traditional publishing typically starts with finding an agent. Poets and Writers has a helpful literary agents database to help you connect with the right agent, often depending on the genre of your book. Now, it will most likely take some time to find the right agent for you and your work. Publishing with an agent has many facets, and is not always simple.
When you decide on an agent, or are looking, it is important again to factor in cost. Discuss fees or commission the agent will take, and if they are conditioned on the book being published, or simply on their role in assisting you. You will also want to consider the agents experience, prior success, and professionalism. Also, decide your expectations for your agent and communicate those clearly up front.
You also have the option to seek a publisher without an agent, but this is typically quite difficult without the connections and know-how most agents can provide. Either way, traditional publishing is much more of a process. You may wait for months or years for a publisher to pick up your book for distribution. It may never happen, no matter how hard you try. However, your agent could connect you with a publishing house and have your book in the process of distribution fairly quickly.
When a publishing house does select your book, the financial aspect of publishing is different between self-publishing and traditional publishing. Authors often are offered an advance on their book once it is selected for publishing. A nice hunk of money up front is great; however, it is taken from your future royalties. This means you won’t get paid on royalties until the profit exceeds the amount of your advance.
While you don’t have to select an advance, or may not be offered an advance, with traditional publishing, royalty rates are also predetermined. Due to the publishing house taking on upfront cost, and truly a risk if the book isn’t as successful as hoped, your royalty rates are often significantly lower than that of a self-publishing royalty rate.
You can choose to see traditional publishing rates as a positive or a negative. As a positive, the publisher is taking on upfront cost, production, and marketing. This saves you from making little decisions and potentially flopping in a self-publishing effort. Of course, a smaller percentage is less money. You are taking a smaller rate in exchange for their services.
Traditional publishing is primarily seen as the way to achieve success and acknowledgement for your book. Awards and accolades are associated with traditional publishing and a book can gain more momentum through traditional publishing. However, the publisher takes the most creative control, and will decide the cover and marketing of the book. Once you sign a contract, they are entitled to the rights of your product.

How E-books Factor in Traditional Publishing

eBooks are also a factor in traditional publishing. Paper or hardback books cost more due to ink, paper, materials, and production. If you are publishing with a publishing house, most likely your book will also be offered in eBook format. Due to cost, eBooks are typically cheaper to buy than a paper book. This will affect you concerning royalties. You must factor in and calculate the traditional publishing smaller royalty on eBooks as well as hard copies that may sell.
Self-publishing is often highly dependent on eBook sales. When considering self-publishing, many writers begin with eBooks only to gage the success and evaluate whether to publish hard copies. Technology has created another way to read and publish books for a variety of audiences. You must think of your readers and their access to this technology when factoring in the potential success of your book in electronic form.

Publishing Your Book

Publishing your book will be exciting and stressful. It is important to reflect on the best fit for you between self-publishing and traditional publishing. There are many factors to consider, primarily finances, the genre of your book, and how you view success and acknowledgement. Once you have evaluated your goals and expectations, you can decide on the best fit for publishing your book.

Staying on top of everything you have to do as a business owner can be overwhelming. And keeping your blogging going sometimes takes a backseat to your other work. If you would begin using an editorial calendar it would be easier to maintain your blogging efforts. It will also be easy to tie your email marketing, social media and other marketing together with your blogging.
An editorial calendar is a planning tool used by bloggers, editors, and publishers of periodicals such as newspapers and magazines. It is a content plan within the publishing schedule that shows not only the publication dates, but also the content for each issue. The calendar often begins with a list of main topics and then becomes an intricate outline of the contents of each issue.
The purpose of the calendar is to make sure the content is published on a regular basis, and that the material is of current interest to the readers. Editorial calendars also make it easy to publish content in different media.

An editorial calendar:

• Helps in advance planning of content
• Allows assignments to be given to writers in advance
• Assists in making content seasonally appropriate
• Gives a stronger voice to creativity
The primary element of a successful blog is a well-organized calendar. When developing an editorial calendar, first define your criteria. Do you need to consider topics that are seasonally appropriate? Is it necessary to devise content for specific individuals? Use the criteria that are most important for your specific enterprise and don’t forget those all important keywords.
Make notes of all raw ideas; you can then transfer them to a worksheet in your calendar. You will have a list of key topics from which to choose. Decide how frequently you’ll post, on which days of the week, define your type of content, and identify this information in your calendar. Schedule your content slots with specific topics. Schedule posts for a week, or a month, whatever works best in your situation. I have discovered a excellent WordPress Plugin that is an awesome editorial calendar within your blog.
Once you have hammered out a basic strategy, look at the trends and the patterns that engender those trends. Do you receive the most traffic on specific days of the week, or when certain topics are highlighted? This simple data can give you important insights that will reinforce your content plan and your calendar.
Creating a planning calendar can help organization, efficiency and strategy. However, it is a good idea to keep a calendar flexible to some extent, in case last minute modifications are necessary. My editorial calendar is often modified because of a new strategy I discover, new technology that becomes available or I simply feel like ranting on a specific subject.
Make no doubt an editorial calendar will give you peace of mind and make you more consistent in your blogging and marketing.
