I took the month of July, Thirty One days to test some of the suggestions I read online for driving traffic to my blog. After the first few days I realized how quickly I could get sucked in and loose many hours while playing with this stuff. Although this is important I chose to limit the time I devoted to implementing these strategies. As a solopreneur I am responsible for all of my business activities and to limit my time I would set a simple kitchen timer for 30-45 minutes each day.
Now on to the fun stuff. I used methods like: social networking sites (I have read that this is becoming more and more important) article submissions, and posting to other blogs. These methods increased my external links to my site. One of the most important measures for a website is how many other sites link to it. The more links the better. I had 74 external links in July – which was a significant increase. This is fun, I was Stumbled Upon 309 times. My articles were posted on other sites a total of six times. And search engine traffic of 104 visits came from the keyword “coaching”.
I told you I would introduce you to a new resource today. I used this resource to grade my webiste on July 10th and I scored 51 out of 100. Today I measured again and I scored a 77 out of 100. Not too bad.
“A website grade of 77/100 for www.donnaamos.com means that of the hundreds of thousands of websites that have previously been evaluated, our algorithm has calculated that this site scores higher than 77% of them in terms of its marketing effectiveness. The algorithm uses a proprietary blend of over 50 different variables, including search engine data, website structure, approximate traffic, site performance, and others.”
Some of the information the report captured:
Google PageRank: 3 Google Indexed Pages: 67 Technorati Blog Ranking: Top 2.71 %
My 22 year old son who is a techie database creator told me that those sites don’t really work. I choose to believe he doesn’t know everything he thinks he does. The website is www.websitegrader.com. Run the report on your site and the program will give you your measurements as well as suggestions to improve your rankings. It was kind of fun to see what I could accomplish in a short period of time.
Month Unique visitors Number of visit Pages
Jul 2008 642 1202 3919
I will keep you informed over the next few months as to how quickly my traffic continues to grow. I found these strategies to be simple to implement and any solopreneur could easily spend a little time each week growing their traffic.
Here are the challenges I will continue to work on and give you feedback as I make progress: Average time on my site is still less than 3 minutes (not good); and sales are still not where I would like them and I just added within the last few days a free report that folks could subscribe to which should allow me to increase my list.
I would love to hear what you are doing to drive your traffic as well.

A few of the things that are helping: Social Networking is sending traffic my way. My web stats show that Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook are contributing to my web visitors. The other thing that really drove traffic this week were my comments on other blogs. And apparently my keywords are working. I also find this very interesting about 15% of my visitors have saved my site in their favorites. What I find the most exciting is my visitors are staying longer. What I also find dissappointing is the fact that 51% of my traffic exit the home page after apparently reading the first post. I believe that I have an opportunity to improve my writing and help others to become more engaged and want to explore other options on my site.

This week I will add a sign up box on the home page and offer a free report. Also next weekend I will share a tool I used to grade my site when I began and I will grade it again on August 1st and see how much improvement I achieved in the month’s time. Come back next week to learn about this tool and how you can use it to help you improve your web standings.

Do you attend networking events with the expectation that you will leave with new business? I hope not, because the event is simply step two. You should have a plan developed that will take you from step one all the way through to the bank. Networking is like any other marketing strategy that you may use to drive prospects to your pipeline. For the strategy to work you must have a system to follow that will allow you to measure your results and improve as you find opportunities.

No, I did not make a typo when I stated the event is step two. Step one is preparing your dialogue for the event. That dialogue begins with a great introduction of yourself and your business. Your intro must help the prospect immediately identify how they or someone they know could benefit from doing business with you. You must also be prepared with conversation generators (statements and questions) that you would be comfortable saying to the new people you approach at meetings and events. Prepare and practice in advance. There is an acronym that can help you with this: F.O.R.D. create your questions about their Family, Occupation, Recreation and Dreams. Build your conversation starters around these areas of their lives and you will have them talking in no time. Which by the way is your objective, you must learn as much as you can about them. This is not the time to blah, blah, blah about your business.
Step two is attending the event. Pretend you are the host at the event and these are your guests. That intention will help you to remain focused on learning about your guests. Remembering as much as possible from each conversation will pay off tenfold when you follow up. When appropriate make notes for yourself.
Step three is following through with what I call a “Quick Six”. If you touch people six times within a two week period they will remember you. Being remembered is a big benefit for your business. What is a quick six? It is part of your system. Here is an example of how the six touches may go.
1. They met you at the event.
2. The next day they receive an email: I enjoyed meeting you.
3. Two days later they receive a quick note with some piece of information that is relevant to your conversation with them. (Demonstrate you were listening)
4. Day 5 you call and schedule a time to meet. Coffee, lunch or even to share your presentation if they had previously expressed an interest.
5. Sometime during week two you meet. Ask how you can support them in their business. And this is the appropriate time to ask for their business or for an opportunity to do a presentation.
6. Send a thank you for meeting with you.
Step three is actually step three – seven. If you follow a system similar to this you will capture more business from your networking events.
Step eight is adding them to your follow up system. Remember NO is only not today. Statistically most sales take 10 to 12 touches and we have only completed seven. A great follow up system will result in a higher percentage of closed sales.
The bottom-line do not go to networking events expecting to walk away with new business. You must earn that business. Put a system in place to give yourself a higher percentage of return on investment of time.

https://del.icio.us/
www.dmoz.com
I continue to write articles, post to my blog often and comment on other blogs (although I could do more of this).
And this is really cool. Last Monday I used www.websitegrader.com they rate your website on a 100 point scale. Last Monday I had a rating of 50 and after doing just a few of their recommendations today my rating is 66 Yippee. Once my info is live on the other sites I registered for my rating will be even higher.
The results, I have beaten all of Junes traffic with my traffice to date. Not to shabby. Onward and Upward.
Month Unique visitors Number of visits Pages Hits Bandwidth
Jul 2008 256 398 990 27.80 MB
By the way I am open to suggestions. 🙂

I have been doing a lot of reading and research on how to promote your blog and website and I have found what appears to be some great suggestions. So I had the idea that I would dive in, begin implementing these suggestions and diary my results on my blog. This way everyone can learn from my experience. And hopefully I can help others to maybe avoid some mistakes or find shortcuts.

Here are my thoughts; I began my blog to support solopreneurs in the start up phase and first couple of years in business. That support is intended to help them grow their businesses as well as remember to live balanced lives and not let their businesses take over. Not that everyone wants to avoid letting their business take over their life. But, the support will be available. Okay, I got off track a little here. I am going to take this relatively baby blog and use the strategies I have found to determine how long it takes to generate a fair amount of traffic. And we will find out together what works and what doesn’t work.

Let’s begin…About a week ago I added the plugin from www.feedburner.com (netted me three new subscribers). Suggestion number two is to post to your blog frequently and my goal will be three times a week. This will be my third post this week and I have two more in my pipeline. To accomplish this I will set aside time each week to just write, research, and build up a backlog of options. Suggestion number three post comments to other blogs on a regular basis. I began this practice today, Saturday June 28th and plan to continue at least once a week to post comments to two or three blogs. We will find out what the magic number is. Third suggestion that I am implementing this week is to write and submit articles to ezine directories. From my research it appears that www.ezinearticles.com is the most widely used. Today, I am posting my first article. Finally, about mid week I added the Stumble It logo and rated my blog on the site. As you can see their code has been added but the logo doesn’t display properly. I have decided to leave it as is for now.

Here is my blog history with virtually no promotion going on except a small amount of pay per click. I have suspended the pay per click with the exception of the local newspaper site which I have a balance of $50.00 in my account. This will be the only money I spend during the next 30 days.
